Understanding the notes on the fretboard can feel like a daunting task, especially when everything seems to be designed for right-handed players. So, Let’s dive in and transform your guitar-playing experience!

The Left-Handed Guitar Fretboard Diagram Explained

As a left-handed guitarist, you may have noticed that most instructional materials and diagrams are geared toward right-handed players. This can make learning the guitar feel a bit like looking in a mirror – everything is reversed.

But don’t worry! A left-handed guitar fretboard diagram is designed specifically to help you visualize and understand the notes on your fretboard in a way that makes sense for lefties.

What Is a Fretboard Diagram?

A fretboard diagram is a visual representation of the guitar’s fretboard. It maps out where each note is located on the neck of the guitar, helping you to see the relationships between the strings and frets. These diagrams are incredibly useful for learning scales, chords, and even for improvisation.

How to Read a Left-Handed Guitar Fretboard Diagram

Reading a left-handed guitar fretboard diagram is straightforward once you understand the basics. The diagram typically shows the neck of the guitar with the strings running horizontally and the frets running vertically. The string closest to the bottom side of the diagram represents the lowest-pitched string (usually the 6th string, or low E), and the string on the top represents the highest-pitched string (the 1st string, or high e).

Each point where a string and a fret intersect is marked with the note that is played when the string is pressed at that fret. For example, on the diagram above, you’ll see that pressing the 5th fret of the 6th string will give you an A note.

Notes on the Fretboard: A String-by-String Breakdown

Standard Guitar Tuning and Its Notes

Before diving into the specific notes on each string, it’s important to understand standard tuning. In standard tuning, the strings on a left-handed guitar are tuned from lowest to highest pitch as follows:

  • 6th String (E): The thickest string, closest to you
  • 5th String (A): The next thickest string
  • 4th String (D): Located in the middle of the fretboard
  • 3rd String (G): The third thinnest string
  • 2nd String (B): The second thinnest string
  • 1st String (e): The thinnest string, furthest from you

Time For Some Basic Music Theory!

In the world of music, there are 7 whole notes: A B C D E F G

In between these whole notes, we have some sharp (#) and flat (b) notes :
A – A#/Bb – B – C – C#/Db – D – D#/Eb – E – F – F#/Gb – G – G#/Ab.

Your first task is to learn this sequence of notes, as this is the order in which they will appear on every string.

Once you know this pattern you will be able to figure out any note on the fingerboard.

Notice that all whole notes have a sharp/flat in between, apart from the intervals between B and C, and E & F.

What is the Difference Between a Flat (b) and Sharp (#) Note?

Nothing at all, they’re just different names for the same notes.

For example, a D flat is exactly the same note as a C sharp. When ascending a scale you will use sharps, and when descending you will use flats. Simple!

The distance between 2 whole notes is called a whole step, whereas the distance between a whole note and a sharp/flat note is called a half step.

Therefore, a sharp note is a half step above a whole note and a flat note is a half step below a whole note. Still pretty straightforward right?

To the Fretboard!

Now that you’re armed with some very basic music theory, let’s tackle the fretboard!

Assuming that you know the notes of the open strings (E – A – D – G – B – E) you really only need to learn frets 1-11 on each string.

This is because the notes will repeat themselves (an octave higher) from the twelfth fret onwards, so once you know the first 11 you automatically know the rest.

Less work is always good!

Start off by mastering the low E string – begin by learning only the whole notes to make memorizing easier, and then fill in the gaps later on.

The good news is that once you’ve conquered the Low E you’ve also automatically learned the high E string!

Keep in mind the note sequence mentioned above and take it one string at a time – before you know it you’ll have the entire fretboard under your belt!

Quick Tips for Memorizing Fretboard Notes

Memorizing the notes on the fretboard might seem overwhelming at first, but with a few strategies, you can make it manageable and even fun. Here are some quick tips to help you get started:

Learn the Natural Notes First: Focus on memorizing the natural notes (A, B, C, D, E, F, G) on each string before worrying about sharps and flats. Start with the open strings and the notes at the 5th and 12th frets, as these are easy reference points.

Use Octave Patterns: Recognize that notes repeat in octaves across the fretboard. For example, the note on the 6th string at the 5th fret is an A, and so is the note on the 5th string at the 12th fret. Learning these octave patterns can help you find notes more quickly.

Practice with Scales: Practicing scales is one of the best ways to get familiar with the fretboard. Start with simple scales like the major or minor scale and gradually move on to more complex ones. As you practice, pay attention to where the notes fall on each string.

Use Mnemonics: Mnemonics can help you remember the order of notes. For instance, the phrase “Every Acid Dealer Gets Busted Eventually” is a fun way to remember the standard tuning of E, A, D, G, B, and e.

Regular Practice: Consistency is key. Spend a few minutes each day working on a specific string or position on the fretboard. Over time, this repetition will help the notes stick in your memory.

Mastering my left-handed guitar fretboard notes diagram shouldn’t take too long and will help unlock your full potential as a guitarist. Start practicing today and watch your progress soar!

Customer Reviews

As a brand new player, I’m one of those people who really has a tough time trying to make sense of ‘regular’ chord charts designed for right handed guitarists. So this book has been an absolute godsend to me. No more holding charts up to a mirror!!!

Brian M. USA

Finally, everything has become clear! After 3 years of playing guitar I can honestly say that I only really knew around 10 basic chords. Having owned this book for just one week I’ve already mastered nearly 30 more (and counting!). So glad I picked it up.

Blank Guitar Tab Sheets

Looking for free printable blank guitar tab sheets? On this page, you’ll find my handy guitar tab paper to download in several different layouts.

It isn’t too hard to find blank tab sheets on the internet, but they all suffer from the same issue – thick black lines. The chunky and dark lines on these music charts make them so difficult to write on legibly.

So, I decided to make my own!

The sheets below all feature thin and light orange lines which make the diagrams super-easy to write over clearly.

If, for some reason, you don’t dig the orange colors, just make sure to print using only black ink to get a more subdued light grey instead.

Blank Guitar Tab Sheets

The sheets are provided in an A4 size, but as they are in PDF format you can print them out as large or small as you’d like without losing any quality.

You can also download these PDFs with either 8, 10, or 12 rows of guitar tabs per sheet. It’s good to have options, right?

Additionally, there are also options for 4, 5, or 6 rows of tab including a music staff.

Get your free download by either clicking on the images, or using the links below to save a copy of the blank tab PDF to your computer or other devices.

The diagrams become progressively smaller as the total number of rows increases.

Pick the 8-row version for the most space to write on, or pick one of the higher numbers to be able to squeeze more notation onto each page!

Use these tab sheets to note down your latest masterpiece, work out your favorite artist’s new song, or for lessons if you are a guitar teacher.

Blank Bass Tab Paper

Download my handy printable bass tab paper PDFs for FREE! On this page, you’ll find several layouts of blank bass tab sheets that are ideal for planning out your next hit song!

The majority of bass tab sheets you’ll find scattered around the internet are so boring. Uninspiring black boxes with lines that are more often than not too thick to write over legibly.

So, I decided to design my own in the hopes of improving the situation!

The blank bass tab PDF sheets that you’ll find below all feature thin and funky orange lines that are super-easy to clearly scribble on.

Your bass tab will really stand out and be easy to read thanks to the contrast between the lines and ink.

But don’t worry if you’re not a fan of the color! Simply set your printer to use only black ink and the sheets will emerge in a nice light grey shade instead. No dramas!

Blank Bass Tab Paper

Each of these sheets will print perfectly to a standard A4 piece of paper.

However, as they are in a PDF format you can happily print them as large (or small!) as you’d like without losing any clarity.

I have provided three different layout options so that you can choose the best size for your specific needs. Pick from 8, 10, or 12 rows of blank bass tab!

Or, you can also select from 4, 5, or 6 rows including a music staff.

To get your free download either click on one of the images below, or use the links underneath to save a copy directly to your computer or other devices.

The charts decrease in size as the number of rows increases.

If you’d like to be able to jot down your tablature in larger writing, pick the 8 row version. Or if you need to squeeze more onto the page pick the smaller 10 or 12 row layouts.

Similarly, you can pick the 4 row version with tab for extra space, or the 6 row variation for more complex notation.

These bass guitar tab sheets are ideal for penning your next hit song, figuring out the latest track from your favorite musician, or as teaching material for your bass guitar students.

I would be happy to add additional bass tab template layouts if you feel that they would be of use.

Free Guitars Lessons For Beginners On YouTube

Searching for the best free guitar lessons for beginners on YouTube? Here are 14 of the best YouTube channels where you can learn guitar online for free!

There are so many guitar tutorials available online that it can be an absolute nightmare knowing where to start as a new player. Who is the best guitar teacher on YouTube? What channel caters to your specific tastes? Do they upload enough videos every month to keep you busy?

As a beginner guitarist, it is so important to have structure in your learning process. If you are a bit of a scatterbrain like me, it can be all too easy to hop from one random YouTube guitar tutorial to another.

This is where these channels shine!

Below you’ll find a selection of excellent and well-established channels on YouTube for free guitar tutorials. I have tried my best to include pages that will cater to as wide a variety of players as possible.

Best YouTube Channels For Free Guitar Lessons For Beginners

1. Justin Guitar

Best For Structured Courses

YouTube Video

1.7 million1100Weekly

Justin Sandercoe has been producing some of the best online guitar lessons on YouTube for 20 YEARS at the time of writing. As one of the original and longest-serving YouTube guitar lesson channels, it would be a massive oversight not to include this absolute legend.

Video lessons on his YouTube channel ‘Justin Guitar‘ are well-curated. However, the best way to navigate the veritable smorgasbord of videos is by heading to JustinGuitar.com and following along with the free guitar lessons from there.

There, you will find complete structured courses, individual song lessons, technique tips, practice tools, and much more. Oh, and did I mention that all of this content is completely FREE?

So dedicated is Justin to guitar tutelage that he actually recently began a video series where he tries to learn guitar left handed (he’s a righty). The aim here is that by effectively starting again from scratch, he will gain a much better understanding of how it feels to be a complete beginner.

2. Marty Music

Like Justin Sandercoe, Marty Schwartz is another absolute institution when it comes to YouTube guitar lessons. At the time of writing, his channel Marty Music is closing in on the 4 million subscriber mark with almost 3000 videos encapsulating most genres.

His videos include song lessons, short beginner courses, guitar maintenance tips, and beginner guitar theory breakdowns. However, he does concentrate heavily on teaching well-known songs in a beginner-friendly format. For that reason, he would definitely be my recommendation if learning songs is what you’re after.

He is a prolific content creator, releasing a new video almost every day. So, there is bound to be plenty for almost every player to dig their teeth into.

Check out his YouTube channel below. Make sure to head over to his well-organised playlist section where you can easily browse free guitar lessons based on your interests.

3. Andy Guitar

Andy Crowley is another long-standing member of the YouTube guitar tutor community, having been producing content for 13 years at the time of writing.

His videos are mainly aimed towards beginner and intermediate guitarists, with the majority of the content being easy song lessons. Head to his channel and you’ll find videos such as ’10 songs you can play with 2 chords’, ‘Top 5 easy AC/DC riffs’, and ’10 easy guitar solos for beginners’.

For many of these videos, he’ll actually take riffs and solos that are fairly complex and advanced, and then simplify them into a format that a new player should be able to manage. You’ll be surprised at just how many songs you can learn with a few simple chords and techniques under your belt.

You’ll also find a raft of other beginner-focused tutorials such as an introduction to fingerstyle playing, mistakes that beginners need to avoid, and the 12-bar blues.

So, if you’re new to guitar and would like to quickly start sounding great, Andy Guitar is a great place to start.

In terms of production quality and attention to detail, I would rank Song Notes By David Pots as being one of the best on YouTube.

Every video is beautifully shot with multiple angles and includes incredibly detailed on-screen annotations and chord diagrams. All online guitar lessons also include a handy PDF that you can download and follow along with.

A downside is that as the videos are of such a high quality, David can only put out a couple of free guitar lessons per week. However, they are definitely worth the wait thanks to the effort he clearly puts into them.

There are over 500 videos at the time of writing, covering a ton of different genres. Additionally, there are plenty of online guitar lessons on guitar techniques, and theory, and you’ll even find backing tracks to practice along with.

5. Guitar Lessons 365

Best For Intermediate & Advanced Songs

Guitar Lessons 365 does have a separate website where, for a monthly subscription fee, you can join their guitar academy. This is where you’ll find owner Carl Brown’s structured theory and technique lessons.

However, if you cannot afford to pay for a subscription, Carl also has an incredible YouTube channel filled with hundreds of free and in-depth full song lessons.

The channel features tracks from a ton of different genres, with content for beginners and advanced players alike. However, I feel it is with the more intermediate and advanced songs that this channel truly shines.

Complex songs are wonderfully explained across videos that can last over an hour in some cases. I mean, most recently he posted a lesson on that new Extreme song that broke the internet for a while. Trying to explain the techniques behind THAT solo takes a very talented teacher indeed!

Learn Guitar Fretboard Notes

Looking for a set of handy printable guitar fretboard notes to help with mastering the locations of all guitar fretboard notes?

You’re in the right place!

This guitar fretboard notes PDF is designed as an aid that is actually affixed to your fingerboard for the most straightforward learning experience.

Simply print, cut out each row, and place them on your guitar fretboard for instant reference.

The guitar fretboard chart is provided on a single A4 sheet (download link below) that you can print out at home.

A week or two with these on your fretboard should be all you need to memorize all of the guitar fretboard notes.

Of course, you can also use the sheet on its own as a reference for learning the guitar neck notes if you would prefer.

How To Print The Guitar Fretboard Chart

Well that’s up to you now, isn’t it?

Own an A4 printer and some scissors? You’re good!

If you’re using regular printer paper you’ll require some sticky tape to secure each strip in place. You can trim the length depending on how you decide to affix them.

If you have some at home, a quicker option would be to print these out on a sheet of A4 sticky label printer paper. Now all you have to do is print, cut, peel, and stick.

It’s important to make sure that you print it out at 100% size (no scaling) and in landscape orientation to ensure that each row will fit your guitar.

These should be correctly sized for most 6-string electric and acoustic guitars without the need for any additional scaling.

If they are a little small or large for your guitar you can try to adjust the scaling values in your printer properties to adapt.

How To Install

First, you’ll want to cut out each individual strip – I’ve provided a faint dotted line to make this easier.

Each strip is numbered so that you’ll always know exactly which fret to place them on.

To be super safe and make the installation process completely fool-proof, I’ve even indicated on the guitar fretboard diagram which side goes on the thickest string (Low E) side and which goes on the thinnest string (High E).

Printable Guitar Fretboard Notes

Position to the rear! Notice that in the picture above, each section is placed on the back of the fret. This is to help prevent wear and tear and also to aid visibility.

If you are fretting correctly, your fingers should be pressing down towards the front of each fret, right up against the fret wire if possible.

So if you’re ripping and/or smudging these labels it could be a sign that you need to look at your fretting technique!

Remember that the guitar fretboard notes will repeat themselves after the 12th fret, so you may even like to only label the first 12 frets.

Once you’ve mastered the first 12, you’ll know the rest by default.

Download and Print

Whole notes are shown in orange, and sharp notes in black.

Should you use sharp or flat notes?

For now, I’ve provided the guitar fretboard diagram using sharp notes, but if you would prefer flat notes please send me an email and I’ll be happy to whip up an additional sheet.

Quick Tips For Learning Guitar Fretboard Notes

  • Learn the open string notes first – E A D G B E
  • Learn the repeating pattern of guitar fretboard notes – A A# B C C# D D# E F F# G G#. Only ‘B’ and ‘E’ do not have sharps.
  • Next up, tackle the low E string. Once you’ve mastered that you automatically know the high E as well!
  • The notes repeat after the 12th fret, so you only have to learn up to fret 11!
  • Use octave patterns to help figure out notes. Most octave patterns involve skipping a string and moving up two frets. So, if you know where a note is on the low E, the same note will be on the D string two frets higher. Easy!

Blank Guitar Chord Charts

Looking for printable blank guitar chord charts? These guitar chord sheets are available in a range of different layouts as a free download!

While I was browsing the web for some free blank guitar chord charts to download and print I kept coming across the same problems. The main one is that people seem to love designing these things with thick black lines, making them tricky to write on legibly. So I decided to create my own blank guitar chord sheet.

These diagrams are all designed with thin and light lines, making them very easy to clearly write on top of. It’ll also save you a little printer ink! If you don’t want the funky orange color, simply print using only black ink to get light grey lines instead.

They are also in PDF format which means that they should print beautifully no matter what size you go for. I haven’t added unnecessary string names and other pointless annotations, so both right and left handed guitarists can use these.

I have also included several different blank chord chart layouts to ensure that all needs are catered for. If you’d like additional layouts, get in touch and I’ll happily add some more.

Many of these easy guitar song choices are tunes that I personally learned during my first year of playing.

In addition, I also quizzed our followers on social media to ensure that I had a good variety of songs both old and new for all tastes.

left hand free ukulele chords

So you’ve just got your new southpaw uke and need some left handed ukulele chords to get you started? You’re in the right place!

In this article we’ll learn how to read ukulele chord diagrams, master some basic left handed ukulele chords, and at the end you’ll find a huge chord chart which you can download or print for your practice room!

Beginner Left Handed Ukulele Basics

If you are brand new to ukulele you might have a few questions before we start to look at these left handed ukulele chords.

For example: How do you tune a lefty ukulele? What size of ukulele do you need? What is the best lefty uke? Do you even need a lefty uke?! What other southpaw ukulele lessons are available?

If these questions apply to you, then please visit my beginner left handed ukulele guide before you delve into these chords!

How To Read Left Handed Ukulele Chord Diagrams

A ukulele chord diagram is comprised of four vertical lines, each representing one of the four strings on the instrument. These lines are set out as if you were holding your uke vertically in front of you, with the fretboard facing you.

Therefore, from right to left, the strings will be G,C, E, and then A. This is standard tuning on a ukulele, and all of the chords in this guide will be in this tuning.

Next up we have the horizontal lines, which represent the frets. The thick orange line at the top of each chart shows the nut, and then the white lines below represent the first, second, third, and fourth frets. All of the left handed ukulele chords on this page can be played within the first four frets.

The orange circles indicate the notes that should be fretted, i.e. where to place your fingers. The numbers inside the circles show which finger should be used to play each note. Your fret-hand fingers are numbered as follows:

  • Index Finger : 1
  • Middle Finger : 2
  • Ring Finger : 3
  • Pinky : 4
  • Thumb : T (thumb isn’t used in any chord on this page)

You’ll also notice that some chords have one or more ‘O‘ symbols above the nut. This simply means that you should be playing this string ‘Open‘, i.e. play it without fretting any note.

Examples

Just to ensure all of this makes sense to you, let’s break down a few example chords.

Basic Ukulele Chords Left Handed

C Chord – G,C, and E-strings are all played ‘open’. Place your third finger (ring finger) on the 3rd fret of the A-string.

G Chord – G-string is played ‘open’. Place your first finger (index) on the 2nd fret of the C-string. Third finger (ring) on the 3rd fret of the E-string. Second finger (middle) on the 2nd fret of the A-string.

B Chord – Place your third finger (ring) on the 4th fret of the G-string. Second finger (middle) on the 3rd fret of the C-string. Use your first finger (index) to play the 2nd fret on both the E and A-strings. This technique where you play more than one note with a single finger is called ‘barring’.

Ukulele Chord Tips For Beginners

If you’re new to playing uke (or any fretted instrument!), here are a few tips that will help to ensure that these chords sound correct.

Finger Position. When you are playing these chords, try to keep your fretting fingers as close to the fret as you can. Placing your finger towards the rear of the fret can cause the note to sound slightly out of tune, and can also cause a nasty buzzing noise (fret buzz). Practice slowly and it will soon become a subconscious movement.

Finger Pressure. Pressing down too hard on the string could cause the note to sound sharp, but pressing too lightly could cause the string to buzz. Try to find the lightest possible pressure to get a clean note without the string buzzing.

Pick Each Note. When you first begin to learn these chords, it’s a good idea to pick each string individually. This will let you make sure that you aren’t accidentally muting any of the strings. You might not notice this if you only strum the full chord. If you find that one string is being muted, adjust your finger position until you can clearly hear the note.

Stop If It Hurts. If you’ve never played a stringed instrument before you are probably going to get sore fingertips for a while. This will naturally subside as you develop calluses over the coming days and weeks, but try not to overdo it to begin with.

Keep Tuned Up. This might sound a bit obvious, but always tune your ukulele at the start of every practice session. If the chords don’t sound quite right you could wrongly be blaming it on your fingers when it’s just a simple fix to get in tune.
