Left Handed Guitar Stores Directory

Left handed guitar stores are few and far between, but they ARE out there!

I receive regular emails asking if I have certain guitars listed on the site in stock. Unfortunately, LeftyFretz is not a store, but I can certainly help point southpaw shoppers in the right direction!

In this article, we’ll explore some of the best specialist left-handed guitar stores from around the world that have made it their mission to cater to this underserved segment of the guitar community.

These left-handed guitar shops are all doing a great thing for the southpaws of the world, so please support them if you can!

Where Can I Buy A Left Handed Guitar?

Most musical instrument stores will stock a reasonable selection of lefty guitars, and should also be able to special order lefty models from brands that they carry.

Depending on where you live, two of the heavy hitters are GuitarCenter in the USA and Thomann in Europe. Both of these sites are highly trusted and have an excellent lefty selection.

However, the following list includes stores that specialize in lefty guitars, so you will find a much better selection of instruments here than you would at your typical local guitar store.

Left Handed Guitar Stores

GMG Guitare Gaucher – Gironde, France

GMG Guitare Gaucher - Gironde, France

All guitars are individually photographed, so you can see exactly what you are purchasing before committing.

Note that GMG Guitare Gaucher will only ship within the European Union.

Taniguchi-Gakki – Tokyo, Japan

Taniguchi-GakkiTokyo, Japan

Website : Taniguchi-Gakki

Taniguchi Gakki is an amazing store in Tokyo, Japan that always has a selection of mouth-watering lefties in stock.

When visiting their website you’ll most likely need to have the translation feature in your browser turned on as it is only available in Japanese.

Check them out and I’m sure you’ll be treated to many, many brands that you might not have heard of before.

Brands you will have heard of include Danelectro, Fender, Gibson, Gretsch, Ibanez, Jackson, and PRS to name a few.

All rock and metal brands are present and accounted for. Their stock includes BC Rich, Charvel, Schecter, Dean, ESP, and EVH to name a few.

XLG does also stock a good number of non-pointy guitars. Make sure to visit their site at the link above to see their full offering.

Adirondack Guitars – Oregon, USA

Website : Adirondack Guitars

Although Adirondack Guitars sells both left and right-handed guitars, they do place a huge emphasis on their southpaw selection. So it would hardly be fair not to include them in this list.

Adirondack was set up in 2000 with the aim of helping left handed players to locate those hard-to-find lefty instruments.

Brands carried include Martin, ESP, G&L, Reverend, Schecter, Takamine, Washburn, Cordoba, Eastwood, and many more.

Lefty Friendly Stores

This is an additional list of regular guitar stores with better-than-average left-handed sections.

To me, the criteria for inclusion here is an interesting selection of guitars that isn’t purely made up of the usual token lefties that the majority of other stores sell.

Help me expand this list. If there are some great left handed guitar stores (or lefty-friendly ones!) in your neck of the woods send me an email and I will try to add it!  You’ll find a link to my contact form in the footer below.

No doubt I’ve missed plenty of great establishments.

PS! If do you happen to visit any of these stores, make sure not to play anything from this list of Forbidden Guitar Riffs. You may just get thrown out!

Customer Reviews

As a brand new player, I’m one of those people who really has a tough time trying to make sense of ‘regular’ chord charts designed for right handed guitarists. So this book has been an absolute godsend to me. No more holding charts up to a mirror!!!

Brian M. USA

Finally, everything has become clear! After 3 years of playing guitar I can honestly say that I only really knew around 10 basic chords. Having owned this book for just one week I’ve already mastered nearly 30 more (and counting!). So glad I picked it up.

DeAnna C. United Kingdom

The left-handed guitarist’s Bible! The PDF was delivered to my email inbox within seconds and is so simple to use and follow (which is great news for dummies like me!). Thanks Leftyfretz for this helpful book!

Best Band Name Generator

If you are struggling to come up with a unique name for your band then a random band name generator could be just what you need to help inspire some awesome titles!

The internet is chock full of terrible group name generators that seem to do nothing but waste your time by combining completely random words that most of the time make no sense whatsoever.

So in order to save you a ton of time, I’ve scoured the planet and tested all of the apps that I could find. The list below features the 7 best band name generators I could find, which I have ranked based on how useful I thought they were.

Please make sure to take a read through the full list, as each cool group name generator has its own unique features that may make it more useful to your specific situation! For example, if you don’t need a particular word to be included in the name, then some of the more straightforward options may give improved results.

I can tell you that not a single one of these apps will check that the titles are not already taken. So make sure to do your due diligence and perform a quick Google search for any names you like!

Also make sure to check out my huge guide on how to come up with cool band names where you’ll find 27 top tips for creating a unique and memorable title.

Band Name Generators

Indiesound

Try It Out

After testing all of the apps in this list, the generator from Indiesound was my personal favorite. It claims to have over 10 million idea combinations that should work with all genres of music.

The website itself is very simple to use. Either hit ‘generate’ to be given a list of completely random names, or enter an optional keyword if there is a specific word that has to be included.

It will produce a list of 18 names at a time – just hit ‘generate’ again for a fresh page of results. If you spot anything you like just click the plus button and it will be saved to an ideas list for later viewing.

There are no real downsides to this app other than its simplicity. It would also be nice to be able to choose the number of words, or maybe even the specific music genre as well.

The main reason I have placed this band names generator at the top spot is that probably 90% of the band name ideas it spits out sound like they could be actual bands.

The drawback to some of the other sites on this list is that they tend to spit out combinations of words that sound jarring or just plain wrong. I found that this isn’t the case here, so they have clearly put some good thought into how their app works.

Example Band Names: West Wake, Radioactive Journey, Sound Wash, Neon Birds, Sour Guardian, Impure Heaven, Arctic Noir, The Essence

Chosic

Try It Out

Chosic is similar to Indiesound in that it is very simple and straightforward to use, however, it also adds the option to browse by musical genre in order to further dial in your results.

For a totally random set of results, simply hit the generate button. Otherwise, we can enter a unique name to include, or pick a genre to tailor the flavor of names to suit that specific style. Names that you like can be saved to a separate list to revisit later.

An awesome feature that isn’t available on any of the other sites in this list is the ability to quickly check if a name is already in use. To do this, the app scans the artist list on Spotify and will alert you if the band already exists. In addition, if band names exist which are similar to the result it will also list all of those bands. This way you can judge if there could be any potential confusion.

A couple of niggles. If we select a genre without using a keyword it tends to smush together parts of the names of popular bands with other bands. For example, I got ‘3 Doors Zeppelin’ and ‘Killswitch Roses’.

However, keeping things random, or using a keyword with or without a genre genuinely offers up some really great results. I don’t think it would take too long to come up with a big list of potential names with this generator!

There is also a Christian band name generator option if you are looking for names with a religious spin.

Example Band Names: Animal Soup, The Charlie Dimension, August Fold, Dream Avenue, Mahavishnu Five, Paradise Fountain, Rolling Stones, Ice Wish

Group Name Generator

Try It Out

TheNameGenerator easily has the most in-depth app out of all of the websites in this list. Although you can completely randomize the results, it is best to fill in the form with a selection of words related to your band.

The main advantage to this site over most of the others is that due to the large number of boxes you are required to fill in, the results are almost guaranteed to be unique to you.

A downside to this website is that you might find that there are just too many fields to fill in, and many of them probably aren’t relevant to you at all. For example, for some reason, it asks you for the name of an animal and a part of the body. And it’s not as if you can leave these fields blank as all are required before it will spit out the suggestions.

In addition, the site will only show 30 results per search with no way of running the search again. So if you don’t find some good options the first time you’ll need to go back and fill out all 13 text fields again – fairly clunky!

As you’ll see below, the band names it comes up with can be a little hit or miss. But play around with it for long enough by tweaking the seed words, and you’ll surely be able to get a pretty good list of potentials before long.

Example Band Name Ideas: Pointless Angel, Purely Blue, Bookhead, Ronatron, Ron Eats The Book, Divorced Thursday, My Heart Your Fingers, Megabanana

The Story Shack

Try It Out

The band name generator offered by TheStoryShack is super basic, but the results it spits out are pretty much all potential winners.

A great feature is the ability to save your favorites to a separate list so that you can revisit them all later. The site also has a ton of other random name generators that you can test out for further results. I found that the company name generator is especially useful for coming up with some unique single word band names.

The downside is that it only displays 6 names at a time, and there is a fair bit of repetition. In addition, you cannot add any seed words to tailor the results to your needs. But if you’re happy to sit and hit refresh for a while i’m confident that you will uncover some inspiring band name ideas.

Example Band Name Ideas: Syndrome of Victory, Voodoo Phenomenon, Little Puppets, Velvet Circuits, Caged Machine, Glass Karma, Physhex, Jetwood, Plexis

Band Name Maker

Try It Out

The Band Name Maker is another generator with a good number of options, but a few niggling problems prevent it from being placed higher in the list.

This site sets itself apart from most of the rest of the competition by adding a number of fields and checkboxes which you can use to really dial in a unique band name. We can add keyword(s), choose the musical genre, and even add a style to flavor the results.

In addition, we can also choose to have numbers, acronyms, plurals, or names that start with ‘the’.

However, the website seemed to experience problems when we start using too many of the options. For example, if you enter a keyword and choose a style, it seems to forget the keyword completely with none of the results featuring it. Similarly, the checkbox to include numbers only seems to work if we don’t choose a genre or style.

Niggles aside, during my testing I found that sticking with just a keyword and a genre gave some pretty good results which mainly sounded like genuine band names. It also gives a lot of ideas that include more than two words, something most of the other apps don’t offer.

Example Band Name Ideas: Kult Pain, Suffering Shadow, Mystical Pellet, Exotic Twinkle and the Grandma, Majesty of the Agonist, Hazy Princess and the Lips, Bot Injustice

Zing Instruments

Try It Out

Zing Instruments makes the bold claim that theirs is the best app as it will come up with names that are a good fit for your band’s specific genre. In addition, the names are pulled from their enormous music database of unused band names.

The main reason to use this site over the group name generator sites is that it will allow you to select the style of music that your band plays in order to come up with a list that is more suited to that specific genre. So, if you’re after a rock band name generator this could be the choice for you.

Additionally, if there is a certain word you need to be in your band title you can enter it into the text field in order to really personalize the results. You can also leave this field blank if you don’t need that level of specificity.

I found that the names it spits out are generally quite odd, with many of them being jarring mishmashes of popular band names and random words. However, if you require a title for a specific genre, and particularly if you demand a certain word in there, you’ll probably find some useful suggestions if you dig deep enough!

Example Band Name Ideas: Royal Dodo, Night Aretha, Something Modern, Known Company, The King Bee, Reed Curse, Old Atom, Order The Bruxa

Metal Band Name Generator

Try It Out

If you’re looking for a death metal band name generator then this site will give you an unlimited list of all the evil-sounding titles that you could hope for! If you’re in a jazz band you might like to explore on of the other options above.

Simply choose the number of results you want, and hit ‘generate’. You can also check the ‘include non-evil words’ box if you’re happy to consider less satanic options!

Because the database of words that this site uses is laser targeted to this specific genre, the majority of the results are all potential winners. They do get a little weird if you tick the box for non-evil options, however!

Example Band Name Ideas: Vehement Lobotomy, Eminent Chaos, Crimson Pit, Eternal Gorgon, Demonic Remains, Corroded Assault, Brutal Rainbow

Bonus Generators

One Word Band Name Generator

None of the websites above feature a specific option for generating single word band names. However, I do have a recommendation that may work for many of you!

While it isn’t technically for constructing band names, the company name creator at TheStoryShack works as a pretty decent one word band name generator as well.

There are no text fields or checkboxes here, just keep hitting refresh and the site will continually spit out single word business names, most of which could potentially be great one word band names as well.

Try It Out

Funny Band Name Generator

Many of you have emailed in to ask about options for a funny band name generator. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find a solution for this specific need.

In this situation, I would try one of the band name generator with keywords above. This way you can at least gently guide the results in the right direction by experimenting with a various humorous words and phrases.

Alternatively, head to the bottom of this page for a link to my guide on coming up with a band name. In there, you will almost definitely find some good methods for coming up with a funny band name.

Similarly, a girl band names generator doesn’t seem to be a service that currently exists. Try the same solutions in this situation.

Guitar Name Generator

Here’s one that is slightly different. Rather than naming your band, what if you want to name your new instrument?

Why not check out this guitar name generator to come up with the perfect nickname for your new pride and joy?

Try It Out

Conclusions

If you’ve made it this far then hopefully you’ll have found at least one of two good options for your particular situation.

These generators certainly aren’t a foolproof way for coming up with good band names, but they should at the very least help to inspire you and get those creative juices flowing.

When you do come up with a few contenders, make sure to check that they are not already in use or that no similar-sounding bands exist. You can do this via a quick Google search, or Spotify is also a good option. Make sure to check the domain availability as well.

You’ll probably also want to make sure that whatever name you settle on can easily be found in search engines. I was a big fan of ‘Live’ when I was a kid, but they’re not even on the first page of Google with a name like that!

And if you feel that there is a better option out there that deserves a spot in the list, please drop me an email! You’ll find the contact form in the footer at the bottom of the site.

Guitar Jam Tracks

Looking for a treasure trove of high-quality, free guitar jam tracks to practice your scales and improvisational skills? Well, you’ve found it!

In this article you’ll find a list of over 20 amazing sources of free guitar backing tracks, featuring literally thousands of incredible tracks spanning almost every musical genre that you could wish for.

Free Guitar Jam Tracks and Backing Tracks

I have split this list up into 3 different sections, sorting the tracks by source.

Firstly I have provided a variety of excellent backing track artists that you can follow on Spotify.

Next up we’ll look at some of the biggest and best YouTube channels that you can subscribe to.

And finally, I have also listed some excellent jam-track websites and search engines.

Let’s start off with Spotify…

Spotify Guitar Jam Tracks

Spotify is an excellent source of premium tracks, especially if you are a member of their Premium service which offers 320kbps sound quality.

The only downside is that I am not aware of an easy way to search for a specific style or genre from any one artist. A good practice is to favorite or create your own playlist once you do find the tracks that work for you.

On the plus side, having to really dig into an artist’s discography will probably expose you to some killer tracks that you would not have otherwise come across.

Here are a handful of my favorite artists for jam-along tracks.

Tom Bailey Backing Tracks

Tom Bailey Backing Tracks

Tom Bailey has been producing high-quality guitar backing tracks since 2018, with a whopping 80 albums released at the time of writing. That’s almost 1000 jam tracks to delve into!

The key of every song is in the title, and almost every genre you could hope for is here.

You’ll find everything from emotional piano ballads, to rap beats, to heavy metal tracks.

Andertons TV

Andertons Backing Tracks

Andertons have their fingers in many pies these days, so it’s awesome to see that Captain Lee and friends are also helping out the guitar community with a series of premium backing track albums!

They release one album of tracks per year, and are at volume 6 at the time of writing.

So you’ve got 60 high-quality songs spanning various genres and styles to explore.

Superior Jam Tracks

Superior Jam Tracks is another prolific backing track artist on Spotify, with 17 albums released currently. The channel releases new music every week, so there should always be some fresh tunes to jam along to.

The majority of songs here are definitely more chilled out in nature, for example, you’ll find a lot of ballads, relaxing grooves, and soulful jams.

Although there is one album of heavy rock tracks too!

Jam’in Backing Tracks

Jam'in Backing Tracks

Jam’in is a relatively new channel, having only launched in 2020. This is a great page to follow as they release new tracks every week, giving you a constant source of fresh inspiration.

The quality of the tracks from Jam’in is super-high, and there are a ton of different genres to explore, including some very cool drumless backing tracks and a lot of epic, cinematic style tunes.

Quist Backing Jam Tracks

Quist Backing Jam Tracks

Although he’s not quite as prolific as the other artists in this list, Quist has been going since 2012 so does have a fair few albums to his name!

Like Superior Jam Tracks above, he does seem to focus on more laid-back grooves and bluesy-style songs.

There is even a ‘sexy series’ of romantic backing tracks which would be ideal for Valentine’s Day jams.

Nick Neblo

Nick Neblo

Nick Neblo is one of the bigger guitar track artists on Spotify, with almost 40 albums of songs available at the time of writing. His most popular tracks have more listens than many mainstream artists would receive!

YouTube Guitar Jam Tracks

YouTube is probably the most popular source for jam-along tracks, so as you’d expect, this section is the biggest!

A great advantage to these video-based tracks is that the content creators can cram a lot of useful additional information into each song.

For example, many of these videos will overlay the chords being played in real-time, and also display several suggestions for which scales you might like to make use of.

There are thousands of incredible tracks in this section alone, so take the best of what you find below and make your own playlists for easy reference!

Elevated Jam Tracks

Dix Music Studio

Dix Music

Dix Music is a newer channel that I managed to find, having only started producing jam tracks in May 2021. The music quality is ultra-high and they are currently pumping out a couple of new tracks every week.

They have a lot of different styles of music available, but tend to focus on jazz and funk.

I really liked that they occasionally put out backing tracks in the style of specific artists, for example, Eric Clapton, George Benson, and Amy Winehouse.

Note that for some of these sites, you may need to pay for downloads, but all are free to listen to online.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do You Practice With Jam Tracks?

In a nutshell…

  1. Find your jam track
  2. Determine the song’s key
  3. Figure out what chords are used in the tune
  4. Decide which scale will work with the track
  5. Play along!

That’s probably a little too simplistic for those of you who are just starting out.

So, here is an excellent video that explains in detail how to get the most from the tracks in this article.

Where Can I Find Backing Tracks For Guitar?

You can find guitar backing tracks and jam tracks all over the internet, but the most popular source is probably YouTube.

Simply type in the style of track you are after (and probably the key!) and you’ll most likely find hundreds of results.

Additional popular free sources include Spotify and other music streaming services.

Specialist sites also exist, but you will often have to pay for this content.

What Happened To GuitarBackingTrack.com?

GuitarBackingTrack.com was a popular jam track website for years, but was recently purchased and taken over by another company. Unfortunately, the website was subsequently taken offline and there are no current plans to relaunch the service.

Good thing I gave you a ton of new alternatives in this article then, eh?

Easy Guitar Songs

As a beginner guitarist, it can be tricky trying to find some easy guitar songs that you can get to grips with early on.

In this article, you will find a list of over 150 guitar songs for beginners that you can rip into today! For every song, I have provided links to video lessons, guitar chords, and also guitar tabs.

Many of these easy guitar song choices are tunes that I personally learned during my first year of playing.

In addition, I also quizzed our followers on social media to ensure that I had a good variety of songs both old and new for all tastes.

Note that some of these easy songs might require the use of a capo. If you do not own one, you can find out more in my huge guide to guitar capos.

Easy Guitar Songs

I have broadly arranged these easy songs by genre. Many of them can obviously span more than one category, so I’d encourage you to read through the entire list to make sure that you don’t miss any hidden gems!

Alternatively, use the links below to navigate to the easy guitar song section that interests you.

At a minimum, you should know how to read chord charts and guitar tabs to learn these easy songs. However, the video lessons may help those who haven’t quite mastered them yet.

Easy Guitar Metal Songs

A lot of metal songs are actually easier to play than you would think thanks to the use of heavy distortion. This effect often makes them sound more complicated than they actually are.

As a beginner guitarist, I learned a ton of Metallica songs (minus the solos of course!). In general, they are a great band to check out for some easy metal songs on guitar.

Online Guitar Tuner

Looking for a free online guitar tuner? There are bucket-loads of them out there, and I’ve tried them all in order to find the best ones!

In this article I will list all of the best choices for tuning via your computer or smartphone’s microphone, as well as a few which you can use to tune manually by ear.

Can I Tune A Guitar Online?

Yes! There are a ton of free online guitars tuners which you can use to get your guitar to correct pitch. These will generally use your computer or mobile device’s microphone to tune, and range from very simple options to more complex choices with support for alternate tunings and additional instruments.

These are a great quick and dirty option for people who may not have access to app stores, or simply don’t want another app taking up space on their phones.

We are only looking at online guitar tuners here, i.e. applications that can be viewed on a website and that do no require a download to use. Although many of these are available separately as smartphone apps which you may like to also check out if it’s an option for you.

In addition, all of these web-based options are also completely free to use!

The Complete Guitar Tuner Guide
If you would like to learn more about guitar tuner apps, tuner pedals, clip-on tuners, automatic tuners and everything else tuning related, please check out my massive guide to the best guitar tuners.

What Is The Best Online Guitar Tuner?

To really test these I used the (fairly awful!) webcam mic built into my laptop, and I also used my smartphone microphone where possible. I then compared the results with my Snark headstock tuner to check that they were accurate.

All of the tuners listed below are accurate enough to get you in tune to an acceptable level. In saying that, the accuracy is going to be dependant on the quality of your microphone (unless you tune by ear, then it’s all down to you!).

I’ve tried my best to list quite a few options with different features, so that there is hopefully something for everyone in here. Let’s dive in!

TrueFire Online Chromatic Guitar Tuner

JamyPlay Free Online Chromatic Guitar Tuner

This online guitar tuner from TrueFire is about as simple as they come in terms of learning how to use it, but it’s also very capable. Simply grant the site access to your microphone and away you go – no options, no fuss!

This is a chromatic tuner, which means that it will automatically detect and display the note that you are playing. Since it will detect any note from the chromatic scale (A, A#, B, C, C# etc) you are able to tune to standard pitch, or almost any alternate tuning that you like – as long as you know the notes!

When at the correct pitch, the middle light will turn green. Red lights either side will indicate if you are either flat or sharp.

Downsides are that there is no option to be able to tune by ear. Also there is no menu for alternate tunings, so you won’t be able to experiment with exotic new flavors with quite as much ease as some other tuners.

It’s a simple setup, but it works well if these are the only features you need!

TrueFire is also the world’s most popular guitar tuition website, with thousands of video courses for beginners and pros alike.

ProGuitar Online Guitar Tuner w/ Microphone Support

ProGuitar Online Tuner

The ProGuitar Tuner has more going on than the far simpler TrueFire option above. If you need more options than TrueFire offers then this could be a better choice for you.

The ProGuitar Tuner affords you three different ways to gauge your pitch: use the needle display at the top, the digital display in the middle, or the note wheel at the bottom. See what works best for you!

In addition, you can also train your ear and tune manually by clicking each string on the right-hand display to hear the notes.

This online tuner has support for a huge range of instruments – guitar, bass, ukulele, banjo, even violin and exotic choices such as bouzouki.

Each instrument has a ton of different tuning presets to pick from, making this a great tuner for trying out new and exotic flavors. For example, if you select standard 6-string guitar, you will be presented with over 100 alternate tunings!

By the way, it took me a few minutes to figure it out, but if you’re wondering where the menu with tunings is hidden, you need to click the current tuning text overlaid on the strings.

One slight downside is that it does not function on a smartphone or tablet, however you can download the Android or iOS app to get around this.

This is the one to go for if you need plenty of options and features! Avoid it if you need smartphone functionality however.

Guitar-Tuner

Accurate Online Guitar Tuner

This is the new kid in the online guitar tuner world, and sports a very clean and modern aesthetic.

The tuner has support for 6-string acoustic and electric guitar, 4-string bass, as well as ukulele. At the moment it only offers standard tuning for each instrument, although the website does claim that more are on the way.

Tuning options include ‘by ear’, where you can listen to the note and tune manually.

Alternatively you can toggle it into ‘auto mode’ so that the site can access your microphone and tune that way. The tuner will automatically detect which string you are playing, and then give you a satisfying audio alert when the correct pitch is reached. I thought the alert was a really nice feature!

The only real downside of this tuner is the lack of support for alternate tunings.

A very simple, and clean tuner which works very well if you just need something to accurately get you to standard pitch.

Guitar Tuna Free Online Guitar Tuner

GuitarTuna Online Tuner with Microphone

Guitar Tuna is the world’s most popular guitar tuning app, but they do also have a very limited web-based version of their tuner.

I say limited, because this online guitar tuner only offers standard tuning on a 6-string guitar. So move on to the next option if you need more than this!

The website will automatically detect which string you are playing, and indicate if you are ‘too high’ or ‘too low’. Similar to the previous tuner in this list, Guitar Tuna gives a satisfying audio cue when correct pitch is reached.

Tuning by ear is also an option, simply click the note name to hear the note through your speakers.

Guitar Tuna is a very simple online guitar tuner, but if all you need to do is tune to standard pitch it could be a good option for you. And if you require additional features the smartphone app will give you those as well.

Drumbot

Drumbot Website Guitar Tuner

Drumbot is another very simple online chromatic tuner. As it is chromatic, the display will show whatever note you are playing. So you can use this for almost any tuning as long as you know the notes. For this reason it will also work for almost any other instrument as well.

A nice plus point of the Drumbot tuner is that the display is really large and easy to read. While many of the displays in this list are fairly compact, you should comfortably be able to read this one from across a room when maximized.

There is also the option of switching between sharp and flat notes depending on your preference.

The needle will display how far away from pitch you are, and a readout on the left will also show this measurement in cents.

There is no option to tune by ear on the DrumBot.

Although the page does load on a smartphone, I could not get it to register any sounds at all on my Android phone. So this isn’t a good option for those on mobile devices.

Drumbot is a simple option for those after a chromatic tuner. It also has one of the largest, easiest to read displays of all options in this list.

Online Guitar Tuner

Free Online Guitar Tuner

This chromatic tuner is very similar to the DrumBot above in terms of layout, i.e. a very large and simple layout.

The needle display automatically detects the note, and shows how far away from pitch you are. And that’s it – very, very simple!

While I had trouble getting the DrumBot to function on my Android phone, this one had no such issues. Another plus is that it also has support for tuning by ear.

Downsides include no support for alternate tuning presets, but if you already know the notes you need to tune to this isn’t an issue anyway. The display is also not as large as the DrumBot tuner if this is important to you.

A great alternative to DrumBot if a large display and smartphone compatibility, and/or tuning by ear is important to you.

Guitar Tricks

Guitar Tricks Tuner

The Guitar Tricks tuner does not have microphone support, but is a pretty nice option if you’d like to practice tuning by ear.

It has a handful of common guitar tuning presets built in, which you can either have the site strum, or play each note one at a time.

It is also possible to use this site for tunings other than the options that are baked-in. Each string can be manually tuned to any note, so this could also be a great option for alternate tuning aficionados.

A slight annoyance is the inability to have each note repeat, so you are forced to continually click until you reach pitch.

This tuner does load and function on a smartphone, however it doesn’t resize to fill the screen. This makes it very difficult to use on anything smaller than a larger tablet.

A nice option for those looking to work on their ear-training on a laptop or desktop computer.

Fender Tune

Fender Free Online Guitar Tuner

It’s surprising that Fender’s online guitar tuner doesn’t offer microphone support, however it is a great option for tuning by ear. FYI the smartphone app is free and adds microphone support.

It has support for acoustic and electric guitar, bass, and ukulele, and also has a selection of common tuning presets that you can select from.

The notes produced linger for quite a while, giving extra time for you to fine tune your guitar. There is also the option to loop each note if you require additional time. This makes tuning a little easier than on the Guitar Tricks tuner above, where the notes are fairly short lived.

Unlike the Guitar Tricks tuner there is no option to manually change the tuning of each individual string. So unfortunately you’re out of luck if the tuning you need isn’t one of the included options.

For what it is, the Fender online guitar tuner is well designed and works perfectly on any device. A great choice if all you require is standard 6-string guitar tuning and occasional common alternate tunings.

Tune-O-Matic

Tune-O-Matic Tuner

Another excellent option for those of you looking to work on your ear-training.

The Tune-O-Matic combines the strengths of both the Guitar Tricks and Fender tuners to make a very useful manual guitar tuner. It has beautiful, long notes that you can set to repeat as many times as you’d like, and it also has support for a huge number of alternate tunings.

In addition, there is a ‘custom mode’ which allows you to change each string to whatever note you’d like. So the world is your oyster as far as alternate tunings go!

There is also instrument support for anything between 4 and 12 strings, and you can even load different guitar sounds such as a distorted electric, or bass guitar.

It also works great on a desktop computer or laptop, as well as on your smartphone or tablet device.

This free online guitar tuner has a ton of options, and is probably the best choice for alternate tuning aficionados who would like to tune by ear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Online Guitar Tuners Accurate?

Although online tuners aren’t going to be as accurate as a good tuner pedal or headstock tuner, they are perfectly acceptable for general practice. The accuracy will also depend upon the quality of your device’s microphone.

When testing these I used the very basic webcam microphone on my computer, and afterwards, when compared against my headstock tuner they were pretty much spot on.

If you require more accuracy, check out my huge tuner guide at the link above.

Why Tune A Guitar By Ear?

Tuning your guitar by ear will improve your ability to instantly know whether your guitar is in tune or not. Over time you will naturally gain an understanding of the pitch relationships between notes, a good starting point for developing perfect pitch.

It’s a great skill to be able to strum your guitar and immediately recognise a slightly out of tune string. So while using one of the microphone tuners above is super handy, it’s also a good idea to get into the habit of also tuning by ear!
